Indonesia mempunyai potensi yang sangat besar untuk pengembangan agribisnis dalam pembangunan nasional, karena (1) agribisnis sangat berkontribusi dalam pembentukan PDB dengan menyumbang nilai tambah (added value) terbesar dalam perekonomian nasional yang diperkirakan sebesar 45%, (2) agribisnis menyerap tenaga kerja terbesar diperkirakan sebesar 74% dari total penduduk Indonesia, dan (3) agribisnis juga berperan dalam penyediaan pangan masyarakat (Aprilya, 2011).
