In August 2008 terjadi perang singkat antara Russia dan Georgia. Penyebab utama dari perang singkat ini adalah keinginan Ossetia Selatan untuk memisahkan diri dari Georgia dan bergabung dengan Ossetia Utara. Saat itu terjadi bentrok antara kelompok separatis Ossetia Selatan dan tentara Georgia, hal tersebut menewaskan ratusan orang. Sepekan kemudian serangan militer pecah setelah beberapa jam sebelumnya Saakshvili selaku presiden Georgia saat itu, mengumumkan gencatan senjata.
