Intertekstualitas merupakan salah satu teori yang digunakan oleh pembaca untuk memperoleh makna dalam proses membaca suatu karya sastra. Karena setiap pembaca yang berhadapan dengan teks pasti bertemu dengan proses pemaknaan. Pada hakekatnya seseorang membaca untuk memberoleh sesuatu, entah itu berupa informasi atau makna dari teks yang dibaca tersebut.

Teori intertekstualitas pada awalnya diperkenalkan oleh Julia Kristeva seorang peneliti dari Prancis mengungkapkan dalam (Culler, 1981: 104) bahwa jumlah pengetahuan yang dapat membuat suatu teks sehingga memiliki arti, atau intertekstualitas merupakan hal yang tak bisa dihindari, sebab setiap teks bergantung, menyerap, atau merubah rupa dari teks sebelumnya.
