Diantara ketiga sub-spesies orangutan Borneo tersebut, P.p. pygmaeus merupakan sub-spesies yang paling sedikit dan terancam kepunahan, dengan estimasi jumlah populasi sebesar 3,000 hingga 4,500 individu di Kalimantan Barat dan sedikit di Sarawak, atau kurang dari 8% dari jumlah total populasi orangutan Borneo.
