menurut saya tema yang lebih jelas terlihat ialah harapan. alasannya karena dalam cerita terlihat banyak sekali harapan.
1. sue sangat mengharapkan kesembuhan johnsy, namun johnsy tidak memiliki harapan untuk kesembuhannya, dan menunggu kematiannya
2. johnsy yang berharap suatu hari dapat menggambar "bay of naples"
3. Mr.behrman yang berharap dapat menggambar sebuah karya agung
