Sebagai usaha pertama pada tanggal 15 Oktober 1959 bertempat di gedung Candra Naya, Jalan Gajah Mada nomor 188, yayasan mendirikan Perguruan Tinggi Ekonomi Tarumanagara, Jurusan Ekonomi Perusahaan. Perguruan Tinggi ini dipimpin oleh Drs. Kho Oen Bik sebagai Dekan dan Drs. Lo Kiem Tjing sebagai Wakil Dekan. Kemudian pada tanggal 3 Februari 1960 rapat dilanjutkan dengan membahas rencana pendidikan sekolah kejuruan teknik. Sebagai tindak lanjut dari pembahasan ini, pada tanggal 24 Oktober 1960, Ir. Ong Tjing Jong ditunjuk untuk membentuk sebuah panitia persiapan pendirian sekolah teknik. Hasil kerja panitia ini dibahas dalam rapat yayasan tanggal 7 September 1962, dan rapat memutuskan untuk mendirikan Sekolah Kejuruan Teknik Arsitektur dengan pimpinan Ir. Hadmadi sebagai ketua dan Ir. W. Pragantha sebagai sekretaris. Pada saat peresmian tanggal 1 Oktober 1962, sekolah ini dijadikan Fakultas Teknik Jurusan Arsitektur. Fakultas ini merupakan salah satu Jurusan Teknik Arsitektur swasta yang tertua di IndonesiaSebagai konsekuensi perjuangan mahasiswa untuk menumbangkan Orde Lama dan untuk menegakkan Orde Baru, perkuliahan-perkuliahan tidak berjalan menurut rencana dan jadwal, bahkan Fakultas Bahasa-bahasa Modern, Jurusan Bahasa Inggris terpaksa ditutup dan mahasiswanya dengan rasa berat disalurkan ke Fakultas Sastra, Universitas Indonesia. Bagi Universitas Tarumanagara, tahun 1967 merupakan tahun awal kebangkitannya kembali. Pada tahun itu diresmikan penggunaan kampus Jalan S. Parman dengan suatu upacara yang cukup meriah menurut skala perkembangan pada waktu itu. Untuk pertama kali kegiatan di Untar diliput oleh TVRI dan disiarkan keesokan harinya. Patut dicatat bahwa yang mewakili Gubernur DKI adalah Wakil Gubernur Bapak Dr. R. Soewondo, yang kemudian pada tahun 1974 menjabat sebagai Ketua Yayasan TarumanagaraPada tahun akademik 1994/1995, dibuka pula dua fakultas baru di lingkungan Universitas Tarumanagara. Fakultas tersebut adalah Fakultas Psikologi dan Fakultas Seni Rupa dan Desain. Disusul kemudian Fakultas Teknologi Informasi yang telah dibuka sebelumnya sebagai Program Studi Teknik Informatika pada tahun akademik 1992/1993. Dengan demikian pada saat ini Universitas Tarumanagara mengelola tujuh fakultas, yaitu Fakultas Ekonomi, Fakultas Hukum, Fakultas Teknik, Fakultas Kedokteran, Fakultas Psikologi, Fakultas Seni Rupa dan Desain, Fakultas Teknologi Informasi; serta tiga Program Magister yaitu Program Magister Ilmu Hukum, Program Magister Teknik Sipil, dan Program Magister Manajemen.
