Pada dasarnya penggunaan tes yang telah tersedia harus dilakukan dengan memperhatikan dan bila perlu melakukan kajian, terhadap faktor-faktor penting yang sama dengan yang harus diperhatikan dalam proses pengembangan tes bahasa.
Kajian yang perlu dilakukan pertama-tama menyangkut isi tes. Isi tes kadang-kadang secara umum dapat diketahui dari judul atau label yang dicantumkan.Namun judul saja tidak selalu mencerminkan keseluruhan isi tes, sehingga tidak dapat digunakan sebagai satu-satunya dasar untuk penggunaannya. Ada kalanya judul itu pun ternyata tidak sesuai dengan isi sebenarnya, atau bahkan tidak tercantum sama sekali.
