Rhodamin B merupakan zat warna sintetik yang sering digunakan untuk mewarnai suatu produk makanan, minuman, obat-obatan dan kosmetik. Berdasarkan Peraturan Menteri Kesehatan RI No. 376/Menkes/Per/1990, zat ini dinyatakan sebagai bahan yang berbahaya dan dilarang penggunaannya dalam kosmetik karena dapat menyebabkan kerusakan hati, ginjal dan limfa diikuti perubahan anatomi berupa pembesaran organ. Salah satu kosmetik yang biasanya menggunakan rhodamin B adalah lipstik. Ada beberapa metode yang dapat digunakan untuk menganalisis rhodamin B dalam lipstik, diantaranya adalah KLT, KCKT, dan Spektrofotometri. Metode yang mudah dan sederhana dapat dilakukan dengan spektrofotometri karena rhodamin B dapat menghasilkan warna merah yang terdeteksi pada panjang gelombang visibel.
