Menurut Jost (1993) sampai kini kita telah menghasilkan prinsip-prinsip umum dan sastra bandingan yang diterima secara luas di seluruh dunia ilmiah. Setidaknya dalam hal teori sastra bandingan merupakan suatu pemikiran filosofi sastra dalam khasanah humanisme baru. Prinsip dasar sastra bandingan terdiri dari kepercayaan dalam keutuhan fenomena sastra. Dalam negasi kekuasaan sastra nasional di bidang ekonomi dan budaya, mengakibatkan perlunya aksiologi baru. Sastra nasional tidak bisa dipahami sebagai sekedar suatu studi lapangan, sebab perspektifnya terbatas oleh kesewenangan, kontektualisme internasional dalam sejarah sastra dan kritik yang telah menjadi hukum. Sastra bandingan mewakili lebih dari satu disiplin akademis.
