Kimia tekstil adalah salah satu cabang terapan dari ilmu kimia. Kimia tekstil merupakan bidang yang sangat khusus dalam hal penerapan prinsip-prinsip ilmu kimia untuk memahami bahan-bahan tekstil, juga dalam hal memodifikasi bahan tekstil tersebut untuk mencapai fungsi (kegunaan) dan estetika yang diinginkan. Misalnya untuk mendapatkan bahan tekstil dengan warna tertentu serta memiliki sifat lembut, anti kusut, easy care, anti bakteri, tolak air, tahan api, anti ngengat dan sebagainya. Selain itu, kimia tekstil juga dapat diterapkan untuk membuat bahan-bahan tekstil yang bermanfaat untuk bidang medis, militer, lingkungan dan sebagainya.

Pelajaran kimia tekstil dimulai dengan pengetahuan mengenai serat tekstil (fibres) baik itu serat alam maupun serat buatan, juga mempelajari bagaimana proses mewarnai bahan tekstil sampai proses finishing. Serat-serat buatan atau sintetis sangat banyak diperdagangkan di seluruh dunia oleh karena itu seorang ahli kimia tekstil juga dibekali pengetahuan mengenai polimer. Kimia tekstil dan ilmu bahan (material science) memiliki interaksi yang cukup besar dan terus berkembang.

Ilmu kimia tekstil juga menerapkan prinsip kimia permukaan (surface chemistry) untuk proses-proses pencucian dan pada proses pencelupan maupun penyempurnaan. Dalam hal ini seorang ahli tekstil harus memahami kimia organik untuk mensintesa dan memformulasi produk-produk yang digunakan pada proses tersebut.
