Mekanisme dalam menghitung kebutuhan dosen ideal dengan formulasi kebutuhan dosen (KD) dengan membandingkan antara jumlah mahasiswa pada tahun ke-n, dengan hasil perkalian antara lama studi tepat waktu masing-masing jenjang dengan daya tampung satu kelas teori dan kemudian dikalikan dengan total beban pengajaran program studi untuk kelulusan.
Adapun untuk menghitung perkiraan kebutuhan dosen ideal tahun 2016 diasumsikan ada penambahan jumlah mahasiswa, namun tidak ada pengembangan program studi baru. Perkiraan peningkatan jumlah mahasiswa pada tahun 2016 ini mengacu pada trend peningkatan jumlah mahasiswa dalam 3 tahun terakhir (2013, 2014, 2015). Jumlah mahasiswa dalam 3 tahun terakhir terdapat adanya peningkatan jumlah dari tahun 2014 ke 2015 cukup tinggi yaitu sebesar 126 orang, namun disisi lain pada gambar tersebut juga terlihat adanya penurunan jumlah mahasiswa dari 2013 ke 2014 sebanyak 29 orang. Berdasarkan data trend pertumbuhan mahasiswa tersebut , maka perhitungan kebutuhan dosen ideal untuk setiap tahunnya dapat diasumsikan adanya perkiraan peningkatan jumlah mahasiswa sebesar 9%.
