Kyai Haji Ahmad Dahlan lahir di yogyakarta, 1 Agustus 1868, dengan nama Muhammad Darwisy. Ia merupakan anak keempat dari tujuh bersaudara dari keluarga ulama. Ayah beliau bernama K.H. Abu Bakar, imam pada Masjid Besar Kesultanan Yogyakarta. Beliau adalah keturunan kedua belas dari Maulana Malik Ibrahim atau Sunan Gresik, salah seorang Wali songo.
