Kajian sastra bandingan secara umum dapat diketahui melalui dua madzhab. Pertama, madzhab Perancis yang menekankan pada perbandingan sastra dengan sastra nasionalis yang didasarkan pada aspek intrinsik dimana karya sastra diteliti dengan membandingkan dengan karya sastra lain atas pertimbangan dari aspek linguistik, pertukaran tema, gagasan, feeling dan nasionalisme. Kedua, madzhab Amerika lebih mengedepankan perbandingan karya sastra antarnegara, bangsa di satu pihak dan studi bandingan antarbidang di pihak lain.
