Asal muasal hutan Wisata Talaga Remis terkait dengan sejarah Kesultanan Cirebon. Sultan yang berkuasa di Cirebon pada waktu itu ialah Sultan Giri Laya. Sang Sultan mempunyai seorang puteri yang cantik jelita, bernama Ratna Pandan Kuning. Ratna Pandan Kuning adalah satu-satunya keturunan Sultan, calon penerus tahta Kesultanan Cireb on. Sang Puteri menarik beberapa kalangan untuk meminangnya, namun beberapa kali pinangan selalu ditolaknya sehingga membuat Sultan kebingungan, apalagi ditengah situasi yang tidak kondusif sedang terjadi pertentangan antara Kesultanan Cirebon dan Kesultanan Mataram. Sebenarnya Sultan mempunyai jagoan yang dipersiapkan sebagai calon menantunya yaitu Elang Drajat putra dari Banjar Melati. Dia adalah orang kepercayaan Sultan yang menjadi tameng pertamanya. Sehingga agar tidak terjadi kecemburuan dari orang yang telah meminang Puteri dan setiap orang merasakan keadilan, Sultan Giri Laya mengadakan sayembara percobaan perang. Siapapun yang bisa mengalahkan Elang Drajat, akan dijadikan menantu Sultan Giri Laya atau Dalem Cirebon. Pada waktu itu Sultan Cirebon memindahkan pusat pemerintahan ke Matangaji, hingga Sang Sultan terkenal dengan sebutan Sultan Matangaji, Daerah kekuasaan Sultan Matangaji meliputi daerah Kabupaten Kuningan, Kabupaten Majalengka dan Kabupaten Indramayu. Elang Sutajaya dalam mencari jejak Pangeran Selingsingan sampai di desa dukuh Puntang kecamatan Sumber. Diketahui peperangan sedang berjalan sengit dan seru antara Pangeran Purabaya dan Pageran Selingsingan. Pangeran Selingsingan mundur terus ke Desa Cikalahang, desa Mandala sampai ke Desa Kaduela Kecamatan Mandirancan Kabupaten Kuningan.
