Kemampuan mesin motor bakar untuk merubah energi yang masuk yaitu bahan bakar sehingga menghasilkan daya berguna disebut kemampuan mesin atau prestasi mesin. Pada motor bakar tidak mungkin mengubah semua energi bahan bakar menjadi daya berguna. Dari gambar terlihat daya berguna bagiannya hanya 25% yang artinya mesin hanya mampu menghasilkan 25% daya berguna yang bisa dipakai sebagai penggerak dari 100% bahan bakar. Energi yang lainnya dipakai untuk menggerakkan asesoris atau peralatan bantu, kerugian gesekan dan sebagian terbuang ke lingkungan sebagai panas gas buang dan melalui air pendingin. Kalau digambar dengan hukum termodinamika kedua yaitu tidak mungkin membuat sebuah mesin yang mengubah semua panas atau energi yang masuk menjadi kerja.
