Kaum abolisionis mendasarkan argume

Kaum abolisionis mendasarkan argumennya pada beberapa alasan. Pertama, hukuman mati merupakan bentuk hukuman yang merendahkan martabat manusia dan bertentangan dengan hak asasi manusia. Atas dasar argumen inilah kemudian banyak negara menghapuskan hukuman mati dalam sistem peradilan pidananya. Sampai sekarang ini sudah 97 negara menghapuskan hukuman mati. Negara-negara anggota Uni Eropa dilarang menerapkan hukuman mati berdasarkan Pasal 2 Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union tahun 2000
