Industri memiliki tingkat persaingan yang ketat dalam era pasar bebas,meskipun dalam tingkat distributor. Konsumen akan merasa puas terhadap pelayanan distributor, jika produk tersebut tiba tepat waktu, tepat jumlah dan tepat mutu. PT. Semen Baturaja belum memiliki suatu perencanaan distribusi yang baik. Perencanaan distribusi yang dijalankan oleh perusahaan kurang efektif dan memiliki beberapa kelemahan
Dalam kegiatan pendistribusian tersebut terdapat beberapa masalah yang berhubungan dengan penawaran (supply), permintaan (demand), dan ongkos angkut (cost). Permasalahan tersebut dapat diselesaikan dengan melalui metode transportasi. Dalam memecahkan masalah transportasi, dimulai dengan menentukan solusi awal (initial solution) yang kemudian dilanjutkan dengan pengujian optimalisasi solusi awal tersebut. Dalammenentukan solusi awal yang fisibel dapat digunakan beberapa metode transportasi yaitu Metode Sudut Kiri Atas (North West Corner Method), Metode Biaya Minimum (Least Cost Method) dan Metode Pendekatan Vogel (Vogel’s Approximation Method). Untuk tahap pengujian optimalisasi metode ada 2 metode yang dapat digunakan untuk mengetahui optimal tidaknya tahap sebelumnya yaitu Metode Batu Loncatan ( The Stepping Stone Method) dan Metode Distribusi Termodifikasi (The Modified Distribution Method/MODI). Namun pada penelitian ini penulis menggunakan metode VAM dan MODI karena metode ini merupakan metode transportasi yang menghasilkan solusi yang optimum dan merupakan metode yang paling baik digunakan daripada metode lainnya karena lebih mudah dan lebih cepat dalam mengatur alokasi dari beberapa sumber ke beberapa daerah pemasaran

For the testing phase of optimization methods there are two methods that can be used to find out whether or not the previous stage that is the optimum method of stepping stones (The Stone Stepping value Method) and the Modified Distribution Method (The Modified Distribution Method/MODI). However, in this study the author uses the method of VAM and MODI because this method is a method of transport that produce optimum solutions and is the best method to use than other methods because it's easier and faster to regulate the allocation of several sources to several areas of marketing
