Islam memperbolehkan poligami dengan syarat-syarat tertentu. Sebelum turun ayat ini poligami sudah ada, dan pernah pula dijalankan oleh para nabi sebelum Muhammad. Ayat ini membatasi poligami sampai empat orang saja. Hamba sahaya dan perbudakan dalam pengertian ini pada saat sekarang sudah tidak ada.
