Gus Dur adalah putra pertama dari enam bersaudara yang dilahirkan di Denanyar Jombang Jawa Timur pada tanggal 4 Agustus 1940. Secara genetik Gus Dur adalah keturunan “darah biru”. Ayahnya, K.H. Wahid Hasyim adalah putra K.H. Hasyim Asy’ari, pendiri jam’iyah Nahdlatul Ulama (NU)-organisasi massa Islam terbesar di Indonesia-dan pendiri Pesantren Tebu Ireng Jombang. Ibundanya, Ny. Hj. Sholehah adalah putri pendiri Pesantren Denanyar Jombang, K.H. Bisri Syamsuri. Kakek dari pihak ibunya ini juga merupakan tokoh NU, yang menjadi Rais ‘Aam PBNU setelah K.H. Abdul Wahab Hasbullah. Dengan demikian, Gus Dur merupakan cucu dari dua ulama NU sekaligus, dan dua tokoh bangsa Indonesia.

Pada tahun 1949, ketika clash dengan pemerintahan Belanda telah berakhir, ayahnya diangkat sebagai Menteri Agama pertama, sehingga keluarga Wahid Hasyim pindah ke Jakarta. Dengan demikian suasana baru telah dimasukinya. Tamu-tamu, yang terdiri dari para tokoh-dengan berbagai bidang profesi-yang sebelumnya telah dijumpai di rumah kakeknya, terus berlanjut ketika ayahnya menjadi Menteri agama. Sejak masa kanak-kanak, ibunya telah ditandai berbagai isyarat bahwa Gus Dur akan mengalami garis hidup yang berbeda dan memiliki kesadaran penuh akan tanggung jawab terhadap NU. Pada bulan April 1953, Gus Dur pergi bersama ayahnya mengendarai mobil ke daerah Jawa Barat untuk meresmikan madrasah baru. Di suatu tempat di sepanjang pegunungan antara Cimahi dan Bandung, mobilnya mengalami kecelakaan. Gus Dur bisa diselamatkan, akan tetapi ayahnya meninggal. Kematian ayahnya membawa pengaruh tersendiri dalam kehidupannya.
Dalam kesehariannya, Gus Dur mempunyai kegemaran membaca dan rajin memanfaatkan perpustakaan pribadi ayahnya. Selain itu ia juga aktif berkunjung keperpustakaan umum di Jakarta. Pada usia belasan tahun Gus Dur telah akrab dengan berbagai majalah, surat kabar, novel dan buku-buku yang agak serius. Karya-karya yang dibaca oleh Gus Dur tidak hanya cerita-cerita, utamanya cerita silat dan fiksi, akan tetapi wacana tentang filsafat dan dokumen-dokumen manca negara tidak luput dari perhatianya. Di samping membaca, tokoh satu ini senang pula bermain bola, catur dan musik. Dengan demikian, tidak heran jika Gus Dur pernah diminta untuk menjadi komentator sepak bola di televisi. Kegemaran lainnya, yang ikut juga melengkapi hobinya adalah menonton bioskop. Kegemarannya ini menimbulkan apresiasi yang mendalam dalam dunia film. Inilah sebabnya mengapa Gu Dur pada tahun 1986-1987 diangkat sebagai ketua juri Festival Film Indonesia.
Masa remaja Gus Dur sebagian besar dihabiskan di Yogyakarta dan Tegalrejo. Di dua tempat inilah pengembangan ilmu pengetahuan mulai meningkat. Masa berikutnya, Gus Dur tinggal di Jombang, di pesantren Tambak Beras, sampai kemudian melanjutkan studinya di Mesir. Sebelum berangkat ke Mesir, pamannya telah melamarkan seorang gadis untuknya, yaitu Sinta Nuriyah anak Haji Muh. Sakur. Perkimpoiannya dilaksanakan ketika ia berada di Mesir.
Pengalaman Pendidikan
Pertama kali belajar, Gus Dur kecil belajar pada sang kakek, K.H. Hasyim Asy’ari. Saat serumah dengan kakeknya, ia diajari mengaji dan membaca al-Qur’an. Dalam usia lima tahun ia telah lancar membaca al-Qur’an. Pada saat sang ayah pindah ke Jakarta, di samping belajar formal di sekolah, Gus Dur masuk juga mengikuti les privat Bahasa Belanda. Guru lesnya bernama Willem Buhl, seorang Jerman yang telah masuk Islam, yang mengganti namanya dengan Iskandar. Untuk menambah pelajaran Bahasa Belanda tersebut, Buhl selalu menyajikan musik klasik yang biasa dinikmati oleh orang dewasa. Inilah pertama kali persentuhan Gu Dur dengan dunia Barat dan dari sini pula Gus Dur mulai tertarik dan mencintai musik klasik.
Setelah lulus dari Sekolah Dasar, Gus Dur dikirim orang tuanya untuk belajar di Yogyakarta. Pada tahun 1953 ia masuk SMEP (Sekolah Menengah Ekonomi Pertama) Gowongan, sambil mondok di pesantren Krapyak. Sekolah ini meskipun dikelola oleh Gereja Katolik Roma, akan tetapi sepenuhnya menggunakan kurikulum sekuler. Di sekolah ini pula pertama kali Gus Dur belajar Bahasa Inggris. Karena merasa terkekang hidup dalam dunia pesantren, akhirnya ia minta pindah ke kota dan tinggal di rumah Haji Junaidi, seorang pimpinan lokal Muhammadiyah dan orang yang berpengaruh di SMEP. Kegiatan rutinnya, setelah shalat subuh mengaji pada K.H. Ma’shum Krapyak, siang hari sekolah di SMEP, dan pada malam hari ia ikut berdiskusi bersama
dengan Haji Junaidi dan anggota Muhammadiyah lainnya.
Setamat dari SMEP Gus Dur melanjutkan belajarnya di Pesantren Tegarejo Magelang Jawa Tengah. Pesantren ini diasuh oleh K.H. Chudhari, sosok kyai yang humanis, saleh dan guru dicintai. Kyai Chudhari inilah yang memperkenalkan Gus Dur dengan ritus-ritus sufi dan menanamkan praktek-praktek ritual mistik. Di bawah bimbingan kyai ini pula, Gus Dur mulai mengadakan ziarah ke kuburan-kuburan keramat para wali di Jawa. Pada saat masuk ke pesantren ini, Gus Dur membawa seluruh koleksi buku-bukunya, yang membuat santri-santri lain terheran-heran. Pada saat ini pula Gus Dur telah mampu menunjukkan kemampuannya dalam berhumor dan berbicara. Dalam kaitan dengan yang terakhir ini ada sebuah kisah menarik yang patut diungkap dalam paparan ini adalah pada acara imtihan-pesta akbar yang diselenggarakan sebelum puasa pada saat perpisahan santri yang selesai menamatkan belajar-dengan menyediakan makanan dan minuman dan mendatangkan semua hiburan rakyat, seperti: Gamelan, tarian tradisional, kuda lumping, jathilan, dan sebagainya. Jelas, hiburan-hiburan seperti tersebut di atas sangat tabu bagi dunia pesantren pada umumnya. Akan tetapi itu ada dan terjadi di Pesantren Tegalrejo.
Setelah menghabiskan dua tahun di pesantren Tegalrejo, Gus Dur pindah kembali ke Jombang, dan tinggal di Pesantren Tambak Beras. Saat itu usianya mendekati 20 tahun, sehingga di pesantren milik pamannya, K.H. Abdul Fatah, ia menjadi seorang ustadz, dan menjadi ketua keamanan. Pada usia 22 tahun, Gus Dur berangkat ke tanah suci, untuk menunaikan ibadah haji, yang kemudian diteruskan ke Mesir untuk melanjutkan studi di Universitas al-Azhar. Pertama kali sampai di Mesir, ia merasa kecewa karena tidak dapat langsung masuk dalam Universitas al-Azhar, akan tetapi harus masuk Aliyah (semacam sekolah persiapan). Di sekolah ia merasa bosan, karena harus mengulang mata pelajaran yang telah ditempuhnya di Indonesia. Untuk menghilangkan kebosanan, Gus Dur sering mengunjungi perpustakaan dan pusat layanan informasi Amerika (USIS) dan toko-toko buku dimana ia dapat memperoleh buku-buku yang dikehendaki.
Meski demikian, semangat belajar Gus Dur tidak surut. Buktinya pada tahun 1979 Gus Dur ditawari untuk belajar ke sebuah universitas di Australia guna mendapatkkan gelar doktor. Akan tetapi maksud yang baik itu tidak dapat dipenuhi, sebab semua promotor tidak sanggup, dan menggangap bahwa Gus Dur tidak membutuhkan gelar tersebut.
Perjalanan Karir
Sepulang dari pegembaraanya mencari ilmu, Gus Dur kembali ke Jombang dan memilih menjadi guru. Pada tahun 1971, tokoh muda ini bergabung di Fakultas Ushuludin Universitas Tebu Ireng Jombang. Tiga tahun kemudian ia menjadi sekretaris Pesantren Tebu Ireng, dan pada tahun yang sama Gus Dur mulai menjadi penulis. Ia kembali menekuni bakatnya sebagaii penulis dan kolumnis. Lewat tulisan-tulisan tersebut gagasan pemikiran Gus Dur mulai mendapat perhatian banyak. Djohan Efendi, seorang intelektual terkemuka pada masanya, menilai bahwa Gus Dur adalah seorang pencerna, mencerna semua pemikiran yang dibacanya, kemudian diserap menjadi pemikirannya tersendiri.
Pada tahun 1974 Gus Dur diminta pamannya, K.H. Yusuf Hasyim untuk membantu di Pesantren Tebu Ireng Jombang dengan menjadi sekretaris. Dari sini Gus Dur mulai sering mendapatkan undangan menjadi nara sumber pada sejumlah forum diskusi keagamaan dan kepesantrenan, baik di dalam maupun luar negeri. Selanjutnya Gus Dur terlibat dalam kegiatan LSM.
Pada tahun 1979 Gus Dur pindah ke Jakarta. Mula-mula ia merintis Pesantren Ciganjur. Sementara pada awal tahun 1980 Gus Dur dipercaya sebagai wakil katib syuriah PBNU. Di sini Gus Dur terlibat dalam diskusi dan perdebatan yang serius mengenai masalah agama, sosial dan politik dengan berbagai kalangan lintas agama, suku dan disiplin.
Pada tahun 1984 Gus Dur dipilih secara aklamasi oleh sebuah tim ahl hall wa al-’aqdi yang diketuai K.H. As’ad Syamsul Arifin untuk menduduki jabatan ketua umum PBNU pada muktamar ke-27 di Situbondo. Jabatan tersebut kembali dikukuhkan pada muktamar ke-28 di pesantren Krapyak Yogyakarta (1989), dan muktamar di Cipasung Jawa Barat (1994). Jabatan ketua umum PBNU kemudian dilepas ketika Gus Dur menjabat presiden RI ke-4. Meskipun sudah njadi presiden, ke-nyleneh-an Gus Dur tidak hilang, bahkan semakin diketahui oleh seluruh lapisan masyarakat.
