Sudirman bertemu dengan Soekarno di Jakarta, kemudian Soekarno memintanya untuk mempimpin perlawanan terhadap pasukan Jepang di Kota, namun Sudirman menolaknya dengan alasan tidak terbiasa dengan lingkungan di Jakarta. Sudirman bergabung dengan pasukannya di Kroya pada tanggal 19 Agustus 1945.

Sudirman dan beberapa rekannya sesama tentara PETA mendirikan cabang BKR di Banyumas pada akhir Agustus, setelah sebelumnya singgah di Kroya dan mengetahui bahwa batalion di sana telah dibubarkan.

Ketika Inggris mulai mempersenjatai kembali tentara Belanda yang menjadi tawanan perang dan sepertinya sedang mempersiapkan sebuah pangkalan militer di Magelang.

Sudirman mengirim beberapa pasukannya di bawah pimpinan Letnan Kolonel Isdiman untuk mengusir mereka; misi ini berhasil, dan tentara Eropa menarik diri dari Ambarawa, di tengah-tengah Magelang dan Semarang.
