Pertemuannya dengan para tokoh pembaharu Islam di Mekah telah membawa pengaruh besar pada diri Ahmad Dahlan. Pengalaman bergabung dengan Budi Utomo dan mengajarkan agama Islam kepada para anggota BU lainnya serta dorongan dan mereka agar beliau mendirikan sekolah sendiri yang didukung organisasi permanen menjadi penyemangat beliau untuk melakukan gerakan perubahan. Kyai Dahlan kemudian mendirikan sebuah organisasi yang diberi nama Muhammadiyah pada 18 November 1912 (8 Dzulhijjah 1330) yang bergerak di bidang kemasyarakatan dan pendidikan.
