Karakter Dr Dolittle, seorang dokter yang mampu berbicara dan memahami hewan yang kita lihat dalam film Hollywood ternyata diciptakan dari sebuah parit selama Perang Dunia I. Penulisnya adalah Hugh Lofting, seorang tentara Irlandia. Lofting menulis dan mengirimkan surat bergambar kepada anak-anaknya dari parit selama Perang Dunia I.

Alih-alih menceritakan seramnya perang yang terjadi, kisah yang dikirimkan Lofting malah tentang Dr John Dolittle yang mampu berbicara dan memahami hewan.
