Gerhana matahari terjadi ketika posisi bulan terletak di antara Bumi dan Matahari,[1] sehingga menutup sebagian atau seluruh cahaya Matahari. Walaupun Bulan lebih kecil, bayangan Bulan mampu melindungi cahaya Matahari sepenuhnya karena Bulan yang berjarak rata-rata jarak 384.400 kilometer dari Bumi lebih dekat dibandingkan Matahari yang mempunyai jarak rata-rata 149.680.000 kilometer.

Menurut ahli astronomi, gerhana matahari adalah jatuhnya bayang-bayang bulan ke bumi karena terhalangnya sinar matahari ke bumi oleh bulan. Terjadinya gerhana matahari ini tidak berlangsung lama. Ada yang hanya 3 menit sampai 7 menit. Mengapa bulan yang kecil dapat menutupi cahaya matahari yang besar? Karena jarak bulan lebih dekat dengan bumi yaitu 384.400 km. Sedangkan jarak ke matahari adalah 149.680.000 km. Gerhana matahari dibagi menjadi empat macam yaitu:
1. Gerhana bulan total;
Gerhana ini terjadi saat cahaya matahari tertutupi seluruhnya oleh bulan. Pada jarak tertentu inilah yang menentukan terjadinya gerhana matahari total.
2. Gerhana matahari sebagian;
Gerhana matahari yang terjadi saat cahaya matahari tertutupi sebagian oleh bulan.
3. Gerhana matahari cincin;
Gerhana ini terjadi jika ukuran piringan bulan lebih kecil dari ukuran piringan matahari. Pada bagian tengah matahari gelap. Dan pinggirannya berbentuk cahaya sehingga seperti cincin yang bersinar.
4. Gerhana matahari hibrida;
Gerhana matahari ini terjadi saat bergeser antara gerhana matahari cincin dan total. Pada wilayah negara lain, gerhana matahari ini bisa berbentuk cincin. Sedangkan pada bagian negera lain gerhana matahari terlihat berbentuk total.
