aat berusia tujuh tahun, Sudirman bersekolah di Sekolah Pribumi (Hollandsch Inlandsche School), namun ia pindah ke Sekolah Taman Siswa, sebuah sekolah yang didirikan oleh Ki Hajar Dewantara. Kemudian melanjutkan sekolah menengah di Wirotomo. Kemudian ia melanjutkan ke HIK (sekolah guru) Muhammadiyah, Solo.

Setelah Cokrosunaryo pensiun sebagai camat pada akhir 1916, Sudirman tinggal keluarganya ke Manggisan, Cilacap. Ia membantu mendirikan cabang Hizboel Wathan, sebuah organisasi Kepanduan Putra milik Muhammadiyah, kemudian ia menjadi guru di sekolah HIS Muhammadiyah di Cilacap.
