Lebih dari satu dekade lalu, para pemimpin Asean sepakat membentuk sebuah pasar tunggal di kawasan Asia Tenggara pada akhir 2015 mendatang. Ini dilakukan agar daya saing Asean meningkat serta bisa menyaingi Cina dan India untuk menarik investasi asing. Penanaman modal asing di wilayah ini sangat dibutuhkan untuk meningkatkan lapangan pekerjaan dan meningkatkan kesejahteraan. Pembentukan pasar tunggal yang diistilahkan dengan Masyarakat Ekonomi Asean (MEA) ini nantinya memungkinkan satu negara menjual barang dan jasa dengan mudah ke negara-negara lain di seluruh Asia Tenggara sehingga kompetisi akan semakin ketat.
Masyarakat Ekonomi Asean tidak hanya membuka arus perdagangan barang atau jasa, tetapi juga pasar tenaga kerja profesional, seperti dokter, pengacara, akuntan, dan lainnya. Adanya penghapusan aturan-aturan yang sebelumnya menghalangi perekrutan tenaga kerja asing terutama dalam sektor tenaga kerja profesional, didorong untuk dihapuskan. Sehingga pada intinya, MEA akan lebih membuka peluang tenaga kerja asing untuk mengisi berbagai jabatan serta profesi di Indonesia yang tertutup atau minim tenaga asingnya. Tenaga kerja Indonesia bisa bersaing dengan negara Asia Tenggara lain namun kemampuan Bahasa Inggris yang kurang dan kesiapan mereka juga sangat tergantung pada mental. Banyak yang belum siap kalau mereka bersaing dengan tenaga – tenaga kerja luar negeri. Akan tetapi pembukaan pasar tenaga kerja mendatangkan manfaat yang besar Selain dapat menciptakan jutaan lapangan kerja baru, skema ini juga dapat meningkatkan kesejahteraan 600 juta orang yang hidup di Asia Tenggara.

Peran staf dalam suatu universitas sangatlah penting, staf adalah jembatan penghubung dari berbagai penjuru. Penghubung antara dosen dengan mahasiswa, mahasiswa dengan perusahaan, dosen dengan perusahaan dan sebagainya. Untuk menuju internasionalisasi pendidikan tinggi, maka Perguruan tinggi nasional harus terlebih dahulu berkualitas, serta mampu mengembangkan potensi staff yang bisa berkompetisi dalam pasar global. Respon ITS dalam hal ini sangatlah baik, ITS mendukung dan memberi sarana para staff untuk siap menghadapi Masyarakat Ekonomi Asean. Melalui IO (International Office) ITS mengadakan program yang terbuka bagi semua staff untuk mengikuti staff internship. Di dalam program staff internship, ada beberapa tahapan yang perlu di lalui. Adapun tahapan yang perlu dilalui yaitu Tahapan seleksi berkas, tahapan upgrading, tahapan seleksi akhir. Para staff yang lolos tidak hanya dibekali bagai mana cara meningkatkan kemampuan diri saja. Para staff juga diberi kesempatan untuk terjun langsung sebagai peserta magang di univesitas yang menjalin kerjasama dengan IO ITS. Dengan begitu nantinya para staff akan berinteraksi langsung dengan berbagai macam tipe orang, suku bangsa dan budaya. Sehingga memperluas jaringan pertemanan, tidak hanya teman-teman di satu jurusan di ITS saja. Tetapi juga dengan teman-teman dari program studi yang lain dari Negara yang berbeda. Dengan ini, tentu akan semakin memperluas pemahaman para staff akan berbagai karakteristik orang. Staff juga dapat belajar dengan merasakan lingkungan sekitar yang berbeda dari yang pernah staff alami selama ini di ITS

Dengan harapan nanti kedepannya disaat Masyarakat Ekonomi Asean diberlakukan di akhir 2015 ini, staff sudah siap untuk menghadapi nya. Staff dapat memiliki kemampuan bahasa Inggris yang baik, kesiapan mental, perilaku, pola kerja dan seluru sektor lini pendukung yang dapat membantu kelancaran proses belajar mengajar. Sehingga ITS menjadi Perguruan tinggi nasional yang siap menghadapi Masyarakat Ekonomi Asean 2015.
