Selain kunjungan kenegaraan, Menteri Luar Negeri kedau negara tersebut bertemu di sela-sela Sidang Umum United Nation di New York, Amerika Serikat, Selasa 25 September 2012. Dalam pertemuan tersebut, kedua menteri luar negeri sama-sama mempertahankan claim atas pulau Senkaku Diaoyu. Kendati tidak menemukan titik temu dalam pembicaraan tersebut, kedua belah pihak sepakat untuk melanjutkan pembicaraan terhadap sengketa ini dilain waktu.
