Italy is a country in southern Europe which comprises mainly on a long narrow peninsula, shaped roughly like a boot. The peninsula stretches from the high mountains of the Alps in the north to the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in the south. Italy occupies the entire area of the peninsula, except for two small independent states, San Marino and the Vatican.
The area that is now the Italian state has played a central role in the history of European civilization. For about 400 years, Italy is the heart of the ancient Roman Empire. The empire collapsed in the West in the 400s AD. Then peninsula broke into many city-states competing.
