Badan usaha milik negara ini ditugaskan secara khusus oleh pemerintah untuk menyelenggarakan jaminan pemeliharaan kesehatan bagi seluruh rakyat Indonesia, khususnya terutama Pegawai Negeri Sipil (PNS), pensiunan PNS dan TNI/POLRI, Veteran, pejuang kemerdekaan beserta keluarganya dan ataupun rakyat biasa. Sebelumnya, BPJS Kesehatan bernama Askes (Asuransi Kesehatan) yang dikelola oleh PT Askes Indonesia (Persero). Namun, sejak tanggal 1 Januari 2014, sesuai UU No. 24 Tahun 2011 tentang BPJS, perubahan nama dilakukan.
