“Kesejahteraan merupakan sistem yang terorganisir yang dirancang untuk membantu individu atau kelompok agar dapat mencapai standar hidup dan kesehatan yang lebih baik”. Ini adalah kalimat sakti yang diucapkan oleh Walter Friedlander untuk mengartikan definisi tentang kesejahteraan. Serupa namun tak sama hal tersebut juga diungkapkan oleh Andika Diko Septiyatma, mahasiswa FKH Udayana ini mengatakan bahwa selain bertugas untuk menjaga kesejahteraan hewan melalui tindakan yang tidak akan menyakiti hewan tersebut, tugas seorang dokter hewan juga untuk menjaga kelayakan sumber protein hewani, mencegah berbagai penyakit yang dapat menular dari hewan serta menjaga kesehatan umum para binatang. Kesejahteraan hewan merupakan topik yang selalu hangat dibicarakan oleh mahasiswa Fakultas Kedokteran Hewan seluruh Indonesia, bahkan tidak hanya mahasiswa saja, isu tersebut juga selalu menjadi obrolan yang serius bagi kalangan PDHI (Persatuan Dokter Hewan Indonesia).
