Kesetrum terjadi bila seseorang menyentuh suatu konduktor (penghantar) yang sedang dialiri arus listrik bolak-balik pada satu sisi tubuh, dan sisi lain dari tubuh juga menyentuh penghantar yang lain.Tubuh manusia merupakan penghantar listrik yang baik karena sebagian besar mengandung air yang bersifat penghantar. Arus listrik bolak-balik mengandung frekuensi dan energi, sehingga bila tubuh manusia dialiri listrik ini akan mempengaruhi kerja organ-organ dalamnya, dimana akibat yang paling fatal adalah kematian. Itulah kenapa bila kita tersengat listrik yang paling ringan saja maka sehabis itu akan terasa pegal-pegal atau kesemutan di bagian yang tersengat tersebut.
Penyebab dari kesetrum ini antara lain
1. kabelnya yang sedang terkelupas atau telanjang. maka kita tidak boleh memegangnya karena arus listrik dapat mengalir masuk ke dalam tubuh.
2. tangan basah . maka usahakan tidak memegang sebab air merupakan salah satu konduktor yang baik
3. Pada electrical power terlalu banyak colokan, ini dapat menyebabkan setrum karena arusnya terbagi bagi
4. Kabelnya diikat. Menyebabkan arus listriknya berkumpul sehingga energinya lebih kuat,mengakibatkan ketika disentuh kita akan mengalami setrum.

Bila anda merasa takut saat memasang atau mencabut “colokan” listrik ke/dari stop kontak, karena melihat kualitas “colokan” listrik yang tidak meyakinkan, anda bisa berdiri diatas karpet, alas karet atau memakai sepatu/sandal karet saat melakukan aktifitas itu. Ini akan mencegah bahaya sengatan listrik karena tidak ada arus listrik mengalir dalam tubuh.

d. Ganti dengan yang baru untuk “colokan” listrik, “stop kontak” atau kabel yang terkelupas bila anda lihat tidak meyakinkan.

e. Bila ada “colokan” atau “stop kontak” listrik yang terkena cipratan air (biasanya bila hujan), jangan digunakan dulu sampai benar benar kering atau dikeringkan dulu dengan alat pengering.
