Menyusul kemunduran yang dialami oleh Uni Soviet pada akhir decade 1980an, gerakan nasionalin Georgia yang selama ini aktivitasnya dibatasi oleh rezim komunis Soviet pun mulai mendominasi panggung politik Georgia. Salah satu keinginan dari mereka adalah menghapuskan otonomi khusus yang selama ini dimiliki oleh Ossetia Selatan. Keinginan kelompok nasionalis Georgia tersebut lantas diikuti dengan pendirian partai Ademon Nykhas (Front Popular) di tahun 1988 oleh komunitas Ossetia dengan tujuan mempertahankan otonomi khusus yang selama ini dimiliki oleh daerah Ossetia Selatan.
