Status final Kosovo dirintis melalui negosiasi yang dimulai tahun 2006 di bawah pimpinan Utusan Khusus Sekjen PBB Martti Ahtisaari, mantan fasilitator Perundingan Helsinki mengenai Aceh. Negosiasi amat alot karena kedua pihak, Serbia dan Kosovo, bersikukuh pada posisinya, yakni Serbia hanya bisa menerima otonomi luas bagi Provinsi Kopsovo, sedangkan Kosovo hanya bisa menerima kemerdekaan Kosovo.

Very tough negotiations since both sides, Serbia and Kosovo, insisted on its position, namely that Serbia can only accept broad autonomy for the province of Kosovo, while Kopsovo can only accept Kosovo's independence.
