Pembagian administratif

Kabupaten Banjarnegara terdiri atas 20 kecamatan, yang dibagi lagi atas 266 desa dan 12 kelurahan. Pusat pemerintahan berada di Kecamatan Banjarnegara, untuk Kecamatan Terluas adalah Kecamatan Punggelan yang juga memiliki penduduk terbanyak.

Kota-kota kecamatan yang cukup signifikan adalah: Mandiraja, Wanadadi, Karangkobar, dan Klampok.

Transportasi

Banjarnegara dilalui jalan provinsi yang menghubungkan antara Banyumas dengan Magelang dan Semarang Klampok merupakan persimpangan jalur menuju Purbalingga dan Banyumas. Selain itu terdapat jalan provinsi yang menghubungkan Banjarnegara dengan Batangt, melintasi Dataran Tinggi Dieng.

Angkutan bis antarkota yang melewati Banjarnegara antara lain adalah jurusan Solo-Bawen-Wonosobo-Purwokerto, Semarang-Bawen-Wonosobo-Purwokerto, Wonosobo-Banjarnegara-Bandung, Wonosobo-Banjarnegara-Banyumas serta Banjarnegara-Jakarta.

Wilayah Banjarnegara banyak memiliki daya tarik wisata baik wisata alam maupun wisata budaya. Dataran Tinggi Dieng

Dieng berasal dari kata dihiyang (Jawa Kuno) yang berarti kahyangan. Dieng plateau mempunyai ketinggian 2000 m diatas permukaan laut, suhu rata-rata mencapai 13º – 17º Celcius bahkan pada bulan Juli – Agustus bias mencapai dibawah 0º Celcius. Kawasan pegunungan Dieng tercatat sebagai pegunungan berapi yang masih aktif bahkan tenaga panas bumi yang ada didalamnya dimanfaatkan untuk pembangkit tenaga listrik, kawasan ini disamping memiliki alam yang indah juga memiliki peninggalan budaya masa lalu yang berupa situs perbakala dan candi-candi Hindu yang dibangun pada masa kerjaan Mataram Kuno sekitar tahun 809 M – 1210 M. Candi-Candi tersebut berjumlah lima buah tersusun dalam dua deret, deret sebelah timur terdiri dari empat bangunan candi yang semuanya menghadap ke barat, yaitu Candi Arjuna, Candi Srikandi, Candi Puntadewa, Candi Sembadra sedangkan Candi Semar menghadap ke sebelah timur berhadapan dengan Candi Arjuna. Potensi yang dimiliki oleh Dataran Tinggi Dieng al. : Telaga Balekambang, Telaga Dringo, Telaga Merdada, Kawah Sikidang, Kawah Sileri, Kawah Candradimuka. Sumur Raksasa Jalatunda.

Museum Dieng Kailasa

Museum Dieng Kailasa berlokasi di kompleks Gedung Arca milik Balai Pelestarian Peninggalan Purbakala Jawa Tengah, di dekat Candi Gatotkaca, Dieng, Kec. Batur, Kab. Banjarnegara.. Nama Kailasa berasal dari nama gunung yang oleh agama Hindhu, Budha dipercaya sebagai tempat suci (tempat tinggal Dewa Syiwa). Koleksi museum ini berisi artefak dan panil keterangan tentang alam (geologi, flora-fauna), masyarakat Dieng (keseharian, pertanian, kepercayaan, kesenian) serta warisan arkeologi dari Dieng. Berbagai fasilitas untuk kenyamanan pengunjung telah ada seperti : teater untuk melihat film, restoran, Shelter, panggung terbuka dan areal parkir.

Taman Rekreasi Serulingmas

Taman rekreasi dengan daya tarik utama taman satwa (kebon binatang) seluas ± 5,3 ha, diresmikan pada tahun 1997. Terletak 1 km dari Kota Banjarnegara kearah utara. Di lokasi tersebut terdapat juga makam yang dikeramatkan yaitu Makam Ki Ageng Selomanik keturuanan Raja Mataram. Fasilitas yang tersedia : Tempat parkir, MCK, Rumah makan, kios cinderamata, kolam renang, arena bermain anak-anak, panggung hiburan, arena pemancingan.



Waduk Mrica

Selain fungsinya sebagai pembangkit listrik tenaga air, juga dimanfaatkan sebagai wisata tirta serta budidaya ikan dengan sistim keramba, waduk ini seluas 1.250 m², terletak 10 km dari kota Banjarnegara kearah barat. Fasilitas yang tersedia : Tempat parkir, MCK, Rumah makan, kios cinderamata, perahu, speedboat, kereta mini, dayung, tempat pemancingan.
