Berdasarkan peta topographis Bureu Batavia tahun 1903, kawasan ini memang sudah dikenal dengan nama Pluit atau Fluit. Dalam bahasa Belanda, Fluit bisa diartikan sebagai suling atau Pluit yang kerap dibunyikan wasit dalam sebuah pertandingan. Bisa juga berarti roti panjang yang sempit. Meski memiliki berbagai arti seperti yang disebut di atas, namun nama kawasan Pluit sama sekali tidak memiliki hubungan harfiah seperti itu.

Dalam catatan sejarawan Betawi, Alwi Shahab, nama Pluit mulai terkenal ketika pasukan Belanda menghadapi serangan Kesultanan Banten, tahun 1660. Kala itu, pasukan Belanda menggunakan sebuah kapal rusak untuk menghambat pasukan Kesultanan Banten yang menyerang dari arah barat Jakarta. “Pasukan Belanda meletakan sebuah kapal lurus panjang (Fluitship) bernama Het Witte Paert di kali Muara Angke. Kapal itu sudah tidak laik untuk digunakan melaut,” tulis Alwi Shahab.

Oleh pasukan Belanda, Fluitship digunakan untuk menopang benteng Vijhoek di pinggir Kali Grogol sebelah timur kali Angke. Fluiship digunakan untuk menahan serangan sporadis yang dilakukan pasukan Kesultanan Banten dalam beberapa tahun. Oleh masyarakat setempat, lokasi itu kemudian dikenal dengan sebutan De Fluit. Dalam perkembangan zaman dan disesuaikan dengan lidah orang Melayu, lambat laun berubah menjadi Pluit. Setelah masa kemerdekaan, masih dalam catatan Alwi Shahab, jejak keberadaan kapal Fluitship yang dijadikan kubu sudah tidak terlihat.

Begitu pula dengan keberadaan Benteng Vijhoek yang sudah tidak tersisa. Kini, di sepanjang sisi Kali Grogol, dipasang pagar besi dan keberadaan jalan layang (fly over) turut mengubur keberadaan benteng yang tidak bisa dipisahkan dari sejarah bangsa. Kawasan Pluit yang masuk dalam wilayah administrasi Kecamatan Penjaringan, Jakarta Utara menjadi salah satu kawasan hunian elit di ibukota. Selain perumahan elit, kini kawasan Pluit yang berbatasan dengan Teluk Jakarta di sebelah utara, Kelurahan Kapuk di sebelah timur dan Kelurahan Penjaringan di sebelah Barat.

Tidak seperti kawasan Jakarta lainnya, tidak banyak warga asli Jakarta alias Betawi yang menetap di Pluit. Warga Betawi tidak terlalu mengakar seperti di kawasan Kemang, Kebayoranbaru, atau pun beberapa kawasan lain yang banyak dihuni warga Betawi. Pluit kini banyak dihuni oleh para pendatang, seperti warga keturunan Tionghoa yang banyak membuka usaha di pusat perbelanjaan Glodok
