Trem merupakan salah satu mode transportasi massal yang banyak disukai oleh para pengguna angkutan umum. Trem adalah kereta yang memiliki rel khusus di dalam kota. Trem yang berselang waktu 5-10 menit berangkat, bisa merupakan solusi untuk kemacetan. Rangkaian trem umumnya satu set yang terdiri atas dua kereta agar tidak terlalu panjang. Disebut Light Rail karena memakai kereta ringan sekitar 20 ton seperti bus, tidak seberat kereta api yang 40 ton. Letak jalur/ rel berbaur dengan lalu-lintas kota, atau dapat terpisah seperti bus-way, bahkan bisa pula melayang (elevated) atau sub-way, hanya untuk sebagian jalur saja. Trem bergerak dengan tenaga listrik.
Trem menjadi pilihan transportasi umum karena lebih nyaman dan lebih murah daripada transportasi lain.Walaupun menggunakan rel seperti kereta api ,namun relnya dibuat rata dengan tanah sehingga tidak menimbulkan gangguan pada kendaraan lain,serta tidak perlu ada portal,karena trem ini tidaklah sepanjang kereta api,dan juga dapat berhenti seperti mobil lainnya,yang penting masih ada rel yang dapat laluinya.
Trem mempunyai beberapa keunggulan, antaranya yaitu dapat mengangkut 80.000 penumpang dalam satu jam, dan dapat berbelok dengan tajam, sehingga tidak memerlukan banyak wilayah untuk berbelok, selain itu biaya pembangunan dan biaya operasinya lebih murah dari pada kereta api.
