Di dunia ini tidak ada cinta sejati, yang ada hanyalah cinta palsu. Seperti juga kalau kami bersembahyang sujud kepada Allah, kebanyakan dari kami melakukannya karena kewajiban, tidak karena kebutuhan kerinduan, atau cinta yang meluap-luap. Kalau kami berdoa, doa kami berfokus pada kepentingan pribadi kami masing-masing.
Sesungguhnya kami belum mencapai mutu kepribadian yang mencukupi untuk disebut sebagai sahabatmu, Muhammad. Kami mencintaimu, namun kami belum benar-benar mengikutimu. Kami masih takut dan terus menerus tergantung pada kekuasaan-kekuasaan kecil di sekitar kami. Kami kecut pada atasan. Kami menunduk pada benda-benda. Kami bersujud kepada uang, dan begitu banyak hal-hal yang picisan.
Setiap tahun kami memperingati hari kelahiranmu. Telah beribu-ribu kali umatmu melakukan peringatan itu, dan masing-masing kami rata-rata memperingati kelahiranmu tiga puluh kali. Tetapi lihatlah: kami jalan di tempat. Tidak cukup ada peningkatan penghayatan. Tidak terlihat output personal maupun sosial dari proses permenungan tentang kekonsistenan.
