Akibat nilainya yang tinggi sebagai rempah-rempah, buah dan biji pala telah menjadi komoditi perdagangan yang penting sejak masa Romawi. Biji Pala mengandung minyak atsiri 7-14%. Bubuk Pala dipakai sebagai penyedap untuk roti atau kue, puding, saus, sayuran, dan minuman penyegar. Minyaknya juga dipakai sebagai campuran parfum atau sabun (Preedy et al, 2011). Minyak biji Pala juga bersifat sebagai antiseptik, analgesik, dan sifat antirematik (Gupta and Deepak, 2011). Takikawa et al., 2002 melaporkan bahwa minyak atsiri dan ekstrak biji Pala mempunyai aktivitas antimikroba terhadap bakteri Escherichia coli O157. Gupta et al., 2013 menyatakan bahwa minyak atsiri biji Pala bersifat sebagai antioksidan, antimikroba dan antifungi.
