Latar Belakang
Media massa merupakan salah satu saluran informasi yang digunakan oleh Komisi Pemilihan Umum (KPU) Republik Indonesia dalam menyampaikan berbagai informasi mengenai pemilihan kepala daerah secara serentak yang dilaksanakan pada 9 Desember 2015.
Pentingnya peran media massa dalam untuk mensosialisasikan pelaksanaan Pilkada 2015 disampaikan oleh Ketua KPU RI Husni Kamil Malik . “Partisipasi teman-teman lembaga penyiaran nasional penting, dimana kita sangat berharap koordinasi seperti 2014 lalu tetap jalan, karena keberhasilan pemilu kan keberhasilan banyak pihak". Peran media massa dalam kegiatan politik memang sangat penting. Sebagai media informasi bagi khalayak luas, media massa diharapkan mampu memberikan informasi termasuk dalam aktivitas politik seperti pilkada. Terlepas dari peran media massa sebagai saluran komunikasi bagi khalayak luas. Menurut Karlinah dalam Ardianto dan Erdinaya (2004), salah satu fungsi komunikasi Massa bagi masyarakat atau khalayak adalah fungsi informasi.
Sebagai media informasi, media massa diharapkan dapat memberikan informasi kepada khalayak luas termasuk informasi di bidang politik. Pemilihan kepala daerah tahun 2015 merupakan Pilkada serentak yang dilaksanakan di Indonesia. Pilkada serentak ini dilaksanakan pada tanggal 9 Desember 2015. Peristiwa politik besar yang akan dilaksanakan oleh Bangsa Indonesia ini akan sangat menentukan perjalanan bangsa, khususnya kepemimpinan di daerah.
Keberadaan pemilih sangat menentukan dalam keberlanjutkan pembangunan di daerah. Artinya partisipasi pemilih dalam Pilkada sangat menentukan nasib suatu daerah 5 tahun mendatang. Sebelum menentukan pilihan, sebaiknya pemilih mendapatkan informasi mengenai banyak hal tentang pilkada baik tentang tatacara memilih, pelaksanaan pemilihan, sampai kepada rekam jejak calon kepala daerah yang ikut dalam pemilihan kepala daerah.
Kecukupan informasi ini diharapkan di dapatkan melalui media massa dimana pelaksanaan Pilkada itu berlangsung. Kota Depok merupakan salah satu wilayah yang melaksanakan Pilkada walikota pada 9 Desember 2015. Sebagai daerah mengalami perkembangan sangat pesat dan dekat dengan ibukota Negara, Kota Depok menjadi magnet politik tersendiri bagi partai politik untuk memenangkan Pilkada.
Keberadaan dan partisipasi pemilih sangat penting dalam pelaksanaan pilkada serentak, hal ini merupakan salah satu indikator keberhasilan kerja KPU dan KPUD. Tingginya partisipasi pemilih juga menentukan kualitas demokrasi. Namun soal dalam Negara berkembang, soal partisipasi politik menjadi persoalan tersendiri.
