Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui gambaran deskriptif mengenai pengasuhan orangtua yang mempunyai anak sindroma Down, gaya pengasuhan yang diterapkan orangtua kepada anak sindroma down, dan faktor-faktor yang melatarbelakangi gaya pengasuhan orangtua tersebut terhadap anak sindroma Down.
Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus. Pendekatan ini membuat peneliti dapat memperoleh pemahaman yang utuh dan terintergrasi mengenai interelasi berbagai fakta dan dimensi dari kasus tersebut. Metode pengambilan data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah wawancara semi terstruktur dan observasi non partisipan.
Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kejelasan komunikasi subjek KK terhadap anaknya berlangsung baik, kontrol perilaku disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan, kasih sayang dan mudah mengeskpresikan perasaannya, mampu mengajarkan anak sindroma Down untuk disiplin dan bertanggungjawab, serta mempunyai harapan akan masa depan anak dengan cara memberikan pelatihan sesuai dengan bakat dan minat anak. Subjek kedua FR mempunyai kejelasan komunikasi yang kurang untuk memahami keinginan atau keluhan anak, kurang tegas dalam menerapkan batasan-batasan yang boleh dilakukan anak dan cenderung mengalihkan perilaku anak, mempunyai kasih sayang yang tulus kepada anak, harapan sesuai usia anak, serta dapat mengajarkan anak sindroma Down untuk disiplin dan bertanggungjawab sesuai dengan perkembangannya. Faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi subjek KK dan subjek FR dalam proses pengasuhannya saat ini tampak berbeda dilihat dari usia kedua subjek. Selanjutnya, subjek KK tidak mempunyai stres ketika mengasuh dan akan bersikap sangat tegas ketika perilaku anak dapat membahayakan dirinya sendiri. Sedangkan subjek FR tidak mempunyai stres ketika mengasuh, namun kurangnya kesabaran terkadang membuat subjek menyerahkan pengasuhan anak kepada orang lain.
Kesimpulan penelitian ini adalah orangtua yang mampu memenuhi dimensi-dimensi dari pengasuhan serta memahami faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhinya seperti usia orangtua, keterlibatan ayah, pendidikan orangtua, pengalaman sebelumnya dalam mengasuh, tidak mempunyai stres ketika mengasuh, dan hubungan suami istri yang berlangsung harmonis akan menjadikan orangtua mempunyai keterampilan dalam mengasuh anaknya, sehingga mampu menjalankan peran pengasuhan secara optimal.
