Sangkuriang sangat menyukai berburu. Dia sering pergi berburu ke hutan menggunakan panahnya. Ketika ia pergi berburu, Tumang selalu bersamanya.
Suatu hari Dayang Sumbi ingin makan jantung rusa jadi dia meminta Sangkuriang untuk berburu rusa. Kemudian dia pergi ke hutan dengan membawa kayu dan panah serta anjingnya yang setia Tumang. Tapi setelah beberapa hari di hutan, dia tidak bisa menemukan satupun rusa . Dia lelah dan putus asa. Dia tidak ingin mengecewakan ibunya sehingga ia membunuh Tumang. Dia tidak tahu bahwa Tumang adalah ayahnya. Di rumah ia memberi hati Tumang untuk ibunya.
