Lebong merupakan wilayah yang termasuk dalam Karesidenan Bengkulu. Pada tahun 1897 hingga 1930, Lebong menjadi salah satu daerah di Hindia Belanda yang produktif menghasilkan bahan galian berupa emas. Terdapat tiga perusahaan pertambangan emas milik swasta Belanda dan dua perusahaan pertambangan emas milik Pemerintah Hindia Belanda. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dengan menggunakan metode historis berupa heuristik, kritik sumber, interpretasi, dan historiografi. Hasil yang diperoleh dari penelitian menunjukkan adanya perubahan yang signifikan bagi wilayah Lebong, baik dari sistem pemerintahan, tata kota, maupun komposisi masyarakatnya. Perubahan ini terjadi setelah pendirian perusahaan pertambangan emas Kolonial Belanda. Sistem pemerintahan lokal dibatasi dan mendapat kontrol dari peraturan-peraturan yang diberlakukan oleh Pemerintah Hindia Belanda. Selain itu, hadirnya perusahaan pertambangan emas Kolonial Belanda menyebabkan adanya pembuatan jalan, sehingga mempermudah mobilitas di daerah Lebong. Pemerintah Hindia Belanda membangun fasilitas berupa perkantoran, pabrik, tempat tinggal, tempat hiburan, dan sarana pendidikan untuk mendukung keberlangsungan perusahaan pertambangan emas. Di sisi lain, adanya program kolonisasi yang didatangkan dari Pulau Jawa ke wilayah Lebong untuk memenuhi kebutuhan kuli kontrak bagi perusahaan pertambangan menjadikan Lebong sebagai kota yang ramai akan penduduk dan aktivitas ekonomi.
