Ayat ini ditengarai turun sesudah Perang Badar, yaitu perang akbar yang dimenangkan oleh Rasulullah SAW dan pasukannya. ‘Ubadah bin al-Shamit mengisahkan pertemanannya dengan orang-orang Yahudi, namun ia memilih untuk setia kepada Rasulullah SAW. Sementara Abdullah Ubay bin Salul juga menceritakan pertemanannya dengan orang-orang Yahudi dan setia kepada mereka, karena khawatir akan datang musibah jika bersekutu dengan mereka. Kemudian Allah SWT menurunkan ayat 51 surat al-Maidah, yang secara eksplisit melarang pertemanan dengan orang-orang Yahudi dan Nasrani.
