Berbagai macam jenis cyber crime dari serangan tingkat rendah sampai dengan tingkat tinggi, dan biasanya pelaku cyber crime memiliki target tetapi ada juga yang hanya sekedar melakukan percobaan tingkat keamaan pada suatu system.
Cyber crime sangat berubungan dengan yaitu disebut peretas, peretas adalah orang yang melancarkan cyber crime tersebut. Dalam dunia maya peretas dibagi menjadi 3 bagian yaitu : Black Hat, White Hat, dan Gray Hat. Black Hat biasa disebut hacker namun mereka yang bertindak dengan kejahatan tingkat tinggi lebih sering disebut sebagai cracker (bukan kue kering) karena berbeda dengan White Hat yang biasanya meretas dengan izin, bertugas untuk menjalankan instruksi dari suatu pemilik system untuk mengecek kekuatan kemanan yang ada pada system, dan mereka dibayar untuk itu.
Black Hat Hacker adalah jenis hacker yang menggunakan kemampuan mereka untuk melakukan hal – hal yang dianggap melanggar hukum dan merusak. Ini adalah type hacker yang selalu digambarkan dan mendapatkan berita dari media massa akibat ulah mereka.
