Pembelajaran pada dasarnya merupakan upaya untuk mengarahkan anak didik ke dalam proses belajar, sehingga mereka dapat memeperoleh tujuan belajar sesuai apa yang diharapkan. Pembelajaran hendaknya memperhatikan kondisi individu anak, karena merekalah yang belajar. Anak didik merupakan individu yang berbeda satu sama lain, memiliki keunikan masing-masing. Oleh karena itu, setiap orang atau dengan kata lain guru mempunyai cara yang berbeda pula dalam melaksanakan suatu kegiatan dalam pembelajaran. Biasanya cara tersebut telah direncanakan terlebih dahulu sebelum pelaksanaan kegiatan itu dilaksanakan. Bila belum mencapai hasil yang optimal, mereka berusaha mencari cara lain yang dapat mencapai tujuannya. Proses tersebut menunjukkan bahwa orang selalu berusaha mencari cara terbaik untuk mendapatkan hasil yang diharapkan. Setiap orang yang menerapkan cara tertentu dalam suatu kegiatan pembelajaran, menunjukkan bahwa orang tersebut telah melakukan strategi. Dan strategi tersebut dipakai sesuai dengan kondisi waktu dan tempat saat dilaksanakannya kegiatan.
Strategi berbeda dengan model, metode, Pendekatan (approach) dan teknik pembelajaran. Di dalam kepustakaan pendidikan istilah-istilah tersebut di atas sering digunakan secara bergantian. Istilah-istilah tersebut menurut Erman Suherman (2003:5-7) adalah:
a. Strategi pembelajaran adalah siasat atau kiat yang sengaja direncanakan oleh guru, berkenaan dengan segala persiapan pembelajaran agar pelaksanaan pembelajaran berjalan dengan lancar dan tujuannya yang berupa hasil belajar bisa tercapai secara optimal.
b. Pendekatan pembelajaran adalah cara yang ditempuh guru dalam pelaksanaan pembelajaran agar konsep yang disajikan dapat diadaptasikan oleh siswa.
c. Metode pembelajaran adalah cara menyajikan materi yang masih bersifat umum, misalnya seorang guru menyajikan materi dengan penyampaian dominan secara lisan dan sekali-kali ada Tanya jawab.
d. Teknik pembelajaran adalah cara yang dilakukan dalam mengimplementasikan suatu metode.
e. Model pembelajaran dimaksudkan sebagai pola interaksi siswa dengan guru di dalam kelas yang menyangkut strategi, pendekatan, metode pembelajaran yang diterapkan dalam pelaksanaan kegiatan belajar mengajar dikelas.
Strategi belajar merupakan cara-cara yang dipilih dan digunakan oleh seorang pengajar untuk menyampaikan materi pembelajaran sehingga akan memudahkan peserta didik menerima dan memahami materi pembelajaran, yang pada akhirnya tujuan pembelajaran dapat dikuasinya di akhir kegiatan pembelajaran.
Strategi mengajar pada dasarnya merupakan tindakan nyata dari guru atau merupakan praktek guru melaksanakan pengajaran melalui cara tertentu yang dinilai lebih efektif dan efisien. dengan kata lain, strategi belajar adalah cara-cara yang akan digunakan oleh pengajar untuk memilih kegiatan balajar yang akan digunakan dalam proses pembelajaran. Pemilihan tersebut dilalukan dengan mempertimbangkan situasi, kondisi, sumber belajar, kebutuhan dan karateristik peserta didik yang dihadapi dalam rangka mencapai tujuan pembelajaran yang ditetapkan.
Belajar aktif dimaksudkan untuk mengoptimalkan penggunaan semua potensi yang dimiliki oleh anak didik, sehingga semua anak didik dapat mencapai hasil belajar yang memuaskan sesuai dengan karakteristik pribadi yang mereka miliki. Mel Silberman (2007:1-2) memodifikasi dan memperluas pernyataan Confocius apa yang dia sebut Belajar Aktif:
“Apa yang saya dengar, saya lupa. Apa yang saya dengar dan lihat, saya ingat sedikit. Apa yang saya dengar, lihat dan tanyakan atau diskusikan dengan beberapa teman lain, saya mulai paham. Apa yang saya dengar, lihat, diskusikan dan lakukan, saya memperoleh pengetahuan dan keterampilan. Apa yang saya ajarkan pada orang lain, saya kuasai.”
