Pengertian ahimsa sebagai suatu sarana berarti tidak mengenal kekerasan untuk mencapai kebenaran, baik dalam wujud pikiran, ucapan maupun tindakan. Justru kebalikannya,ahimsa harus menciptakan suasana membangun, cinta dan berbuat baik kepada orang lain meskipun orang lain itu telah menyakitinya,bahkan terhadap musuhnya sekalipun.Ajaran ini yang kemudian dimaknai secara lebih mendalam dan dikembangkan lebih lanjut oleh Gandhi. Gandhi menekankan bahwa makna ahimsa sebagai nir-kekerasan tidak semata-mata berkonotasi negatif , namun juga berkonotasi positif sebagai sebuah semangat dan pedoman hidup.
