Ahli gizi adalah seorang profesional medis yang mengkhususkan diri dalam dietetika, yaitu studi tentang gizi dan penggunaan diet khusus untuk mencegah dan mengobati penyakit. Menurut Keputusan Menteri Kesehatan Republik Indonesia Nomor 374/MENKES/SK/III/2007, dikatakan bahwa ahli gizi adalah seseorang yang telah mengikuti dan menyelesaikan pendidikan akademik dalam bidang gizi sesuai aturan yang berlaku, mempunyai tugas, tanggung jawab dan wewenang secara penuh untuk melakukan kegiatan funsional dalam bidang pelayanan gizi, makanan dan dietetik baik di masyarakat, individu atau rumah sakit.
