Sungai terpanjang di AS, Mississippi meluap sepanjang 8 kilometer. Luapannya itu nyaris menenggelamkan kota Missouri yang wilayahnya dilewati sungai itu.

Luapan sungai tersebut terjadi akibat anomali cuaca yang terjadi wilayah selatan AS, seperti hujan badai dan tornado yang telah terjadi dalam seminggu terakhir.

Gubernur Missouri Jay Nixon mengatakan 18 orang tewas akibat banjir, seperti dilansir BBC, Rabu (30/12/2015).

Ia juga mengatakan, pihaknya telah meminta pasukan Pengaman Nasional atau National Guard untuk membantu pihak keamanan setempat.

Nixon mengumukan air bakal terus meluap hingga Kamis 31 Desember mendatang. Hujan badai diperkirakan bakal terus hampiri negara bagian itu. Luapan sungai dikhawatirkan akan lebih parah lagi.

"National Guard akan memberi bantuan kepada warga dibantu pihak aparat setempat. Mereka telah bekerja sepanjang waktu untuk menyelamatkan kita semua," tambahnya.

Ia juga memprediksi jumlah kematian akibat banjir bakal meningkat. Kebanyakan mereka yang tewas karena terperangkap dalam mobil sementara arus sungai begitu kencang dan cepat.
