Seni ialah penggunaan kreatif imajinasi manusia untuk menerangkan, memahami, dan menikmati kehidupan. Karena itu terdapat banyak seni yang diciptakan oleh manusia untuk mengungkapkan apa yang dia rasakan dalam menikmati kehidupan. Selain itu para ahli antropologi telah menemukan bahwa seni mencerminkan nilai-nilai kebudayaan dan perhatian rakyat (Haviland, 1988:223).Seni dapat difungsikan sebagai alat untuk merasakan kenikmatan pada kehidupan sehari-hari. Dalam setiap bentuk kesenian yang beraneka ragam seperti seni musik, seni tari, seni rupa akan mempunyai fungsi untuk menambah solidaritas manusia dengan sekitarnya.
Dalam dimensi kebudayaan, kesenian bukan semata-mata produk estetika, serta bukan semata-mata berfungsi estetik, ia lahir dari kesadaran utuh masyarakat baik itu kesadaran religius, kesadaran sosial, kesadaran moral dan kesadaran estetik. Oleh karena itu kesenian sudah selayaknya didudukkan dalam fungsinya yang benar dalam masyarakat, yakni sebagai media penyadaran religiusitas, penyadaran sosial, penyadaran moral, bukan malah dipinggirkan.
