A huge amount of equipment is necessary in order to find, extract, transport, process and distribute oil, including everything from drilling rigs to pumps, heat exchangers, pipelines, mobile fleets and control devices. This equipment is becoming increasingly complex to operate and is very expensive. In Alberta alone the industry spent over $5 billion in 2015 on maintenance related oilfield services.
