Awalnya AirAsia dimiliki oleh DRB-HICOM milik Pemerintah Malaysia namun maskapai ini memiliki beban yang berat dan akhirnya dibeli oleh mantan eksekutif Time Warner, Tony Fernandes, dengan harga simbolik 1 Ringgit pada 2 Desember 2001. Tony melakukan turnaround dan AirAsia berhasil membukukan laba pada 2002 dengan berbagai rute baru dan harga promosi serendah 10 RM bersaing dengan Malaysia Airlines.
